Today I was able to sit down with Salvador Sanchez Strawbridge, who is apart of the Santa Rosa Violence Prevention Partnership. Sal shared with me how his life experiences lead him to where he is today and how he is giving back to his community.
Sal did not have an easy childhood and was affiliated with a gang at a young age. I personally do not know a lot about the dynamics of a gang and he was able to provide me with a little more insight. He shared that being apart of a gang filled a void in his life and how this void was filled with conditional love, not unconditional love. To be apart of this lifestyle you were asked to do something in return for acceptance and a false sense of love.
Sal has since then turned these experiences into positive change through the help of Homeboy Industries and his own personal journey. Sal found passion in photography and has used photovoice as a powerful tool to identify, represent and empower social change in his community.
