Trauma Informed Resilience and Sonoma County Wildfires 2017

The May 17 CalBRACE Local Health Department Partnership Community of Practice Call on Climate Change presented by the California Department of Public Health CalBRACE program.

Last year California experienced significant climate-related impacts on human health, including many lives lost from wildfires. The recovery is ongoing and we would like to keep a focus on the people still working through the day-to-day trials with survivors who are still struggling. This call will examine how health equity, social justice, and Adult Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are influencing factors in survivors’ lives.

Nick Dalton of Hanna Institute and Wendy Wheelwright from the Sonoma County Behavioral Health Division share their observations of the 2017 North Bay fires, how communities are coping in the Sonoma Valley, and how the Hanna Institute is addressing these impacts and the perspective from the Behavioral Health Division regarding community trauma and resilience in the face of the wildfires.

Sharing their experiences, and what is happening today as the county continues on the long road to recovery. They will share challenges and opportunities to consider for inclusion in adaptation plans.  These include time considerations such as long recovery periods after catastrophic wildfires and other events, as well as potential gaps in the response phase. Integrating climate adaptation planning and implementation across public health to reduce injury, diseases and mortality is becoming more crucial, and this call will address practical considerations from the 2017 Sonoma County fires.
