Lesley just recently completed an internship with Sonoma County Department of Health Services, where she focused on developing communication tools around the topic of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Trauma. Today she felt inspired to share some tips on communication with the local journalist who wrote yesterday's article.

Free of Violation of Rights - Legal Imperatives That Could Address the Impact of ACEs
Last week, I took a call from a passionate suicide prevention advocate, James Gallant who wanted to discuss an approach for reducing ACEs. "Do you assess kids with disabilities for violations of their legal rights?" James asked. I was stumped at how to answer this, and didn't immediately see the connection to ACEs. But as James went on to share his expertise on the subject, I felt more compelled to find out what we are doing locally. James makes the case that kids with an ACE score of 1 are...

Re: Thoughts About Next Steps for Sonoma County ACES Connection
Hi, Allen -- This is terrific! Thanks for thinking about this. My only suggestion would be to have an assets-mapping committee -- two or three people who keep track of what organizations have started to become trauma-informed and where they are on their journey. Or maybe you're already seeing that as part of the membership committee? If not, the assets-mapping folks can be the source to provide information for the membership and best practices committees. Looking forward to talking about...

Hi Tina I am the Parent Resources Director at CPI (Child Parent Institute). Now that everyone has given you the evidence based etc formal info, I will add the informal info. I think what helped us be such enthusiastic implementers of the Family Strengthening model was that we did some staff trainings that were a fun way to learn about this model. I used some activities that helped staff think about what factors they had and how they could see that in themselves and in the families we serve.

Re: When Schools Meet Trauma With Understanding, Not Discipline
Hi Holly, I completely agree that discipline is not the answer to treating or healing trauma. Another example of this is when administrators take recess away from children who have 'behavior issues'. As we know, when we punish children by taking away recess for example, they negative behavior increases. Children, adolescents, and even adults need someone supportive to talk to, especially after a traumatic event. I love hearing new positive methods like this and I do believe some of these...
