The ETCCY East TN ACEs Knowledge Mobilization Team conducted an educational event and hosted an ACEs “Train the Trainer” on “Building Strong Brains” on October 2, 2018 in Knoxville at Bridgewater Place.
The guest speaker for the educational event was Becky Haas, Community Crime Prevention Programs Director for the Johnson City Police Department, who presented SAMHSA’s Trauma Informed Approach: Key Principles-A New Understanding of Trauma” to 151 attendees.
Ms. Haas’ training objectives for the attendees of the presentation included the Key Principles of Trauma, Trauma’s Impact on Brain Development, Using ACE and the Prevalence of Trauma, the Four “R’s” of Trauma Informed Agencies, SAMHSA’s Key Principles for Trauma Approach, Where Do We Go from Here-Review Your Agency, and Offering Hope and Healing.
Prior to the educational presentation, TCCY Regional Administrator Lindsey Cody discussed the East Tennessee’s ACE’s Mobilization Team efforts to continue spreading the message about Tennessee’s ACE’s Initiative of “Building Strong Brains” to the 16 counties in the East Tennessee Region which include Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union.
A tour of the 16 Counties will begin in the late fall and includes formal visits to each of the County Mayors, establishing a main contact, and utilizing BSB alumni available to ensure that “Building Strong Brains” has been conducted. At the same time, coordinate with other stakeholders in each county area to include ETCCY Council Members, Coordinated School Health, School Systems, DCS, DHS, and other agencies that serve Children and Families in the Communities to ensure that ACEs information continues into the areas where needed, and additional presentations of “Building Strong Brains."

On the same day, the staff of the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth conducted an ACEs “Train the Trainer” on “Building Strong Brains” with 40 selected attendees. The training is part of Tennessee’s ACE’s Initiative of Building Strong Brains Goals of insuring that every child born in Tennessee has the opportunity to lead a healthy, productive life, to raise public awareness about ACEs, impact public policy in Tennessee to support prevention of ACEs and to reduce community conditions that contribute to them, support innovative local and state projects that offer fresh thinking and precise measurements of impact of addressing ACEs and toxic stress in children, and to seek sustainable funding to ensure the state maintains a long-term commitment to reduce the impact of adverse childhood experiences.
The Facilitators of the training included John Rust, Director of Field Operations for the TCCY, Craig Hargrow, Deputy Executive Director of the TCCY, Sumita Keller, Director of Statewide Partnerships for the TCCY, and assisted by Russette Sloan, Executive Administrative Assistant for the TCCY. To date, there have been 835 Alumni trained on ACEs by the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth.
