Self-Healing Communities Model

“The Self-Healing Communities Model (SHCM) builds the capacity of communities to intentionally generate new cultural norms and thereby improve health, safety and productivity for current and future generations.”

This model was implemented in Washington State and was successful in improving rates of many interrelated and intergenerational health and social problems by investing in the people at risk. They worked to reduce and prevent the root of the issue being Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).

This model aims to strengthen culture and community capacity by empowering communities to recognize their own ability to make change, and provide a sense of hope that what they do will make a difference.

You may be wondering, is this model sustainable? This model is sustainable due to the fact that it works to increase the general community capacity to create a sense of togetherness and a place for people to build relationships and create a support network. With this increased community capacity comes solutions to locally prioritized issues and improvements to problem solving early.

Here is a list of the six integrity principles of the SHCM Model:

  1. Inclusive leadership
  2. Learning communities
  3. Emergent capabilities
  4. Engagement informed neuroscience, epigenetics, adverse childhood experience and resilience research.
  5. Right -fit solutions
  6. Hope and efficacy
