Post from Carl Anthony and Paloma Pavel about Oakland/SF Bay Area Resilience Efforts

Hello Bob,

A few things. We are interested in participating in both initiatives (the statewide steering committee and the statewide policy group), if we can balance them with our other work demands. In the meantime, we want to share some information on other activities in which we are involved (Paloma mentioned these during the conference call today). Could you post these to the forum? Thanks so much!

1.There is a free showing of Demain (Tomorrow) and a panel discussion (with Carl Anthony, John Gioia, Carey Batha, and more), and a workshop happening Saturday, 3/10 at 10am. Doors open at 9:30 am at the El Cerrito City Hall (map). Demain(Tomorrow) is an inspirational film that showcases creative solutions to climate change in local communities around the world. Please see link for more info: www.el-cerrito.org/newgreen.  The film presentation is an element in an ongoing film series put on El Cerrito’s Environmental Quality Committee. The series can be a useful vehicle for communicating strategies for resilience and transformation.

2.We are part of the Resilient Communities Initiative, which organizes the most disadvantaged communities to address sea level rise in context of the SF Bay Area. Please contact us if you would like more information.

3. We are part of the Statewide Environmental Literacy Steering Committee (ELSC) in California. ELSC is an effort to develop and promote a K-12 curriculum that addresses environmental justice issues in 1000 school districts in the state. This initiative is particularly interested in ways to implement an equity agenda addressing the needs of low-income families and communities of color, taking advantage of the mobilizing efforts of the community groups throughout the state. The effort to develop this curriculum is related to our interest in addressing the trauma of extreme weather events and their disproportionate effects on disadvantaged communities. Please contact us if you would like more information.

4. We created a report called, “Mapping Our Future”, which is a work plan for public engagement and equity in climate adaptation planning in the SF Bay Area. This report presents a plan for regional agencies to partner with community groups on climate adaptation, and support local governments in doing so as well. It also provides parallel recommendations for funders and community groups. The report describes climate vulnerability as based on income, race, health conditions, age, living arrangements, occupation, language barriers, and related issues. Breakthrough Communities collaborated with Bay Localize and others in administering a questionnaire to 400 low-income people on their priorities for addressing climate change. Please contact us for more information.

If you have an interest in any of these items, please be in touch with us at earthhouseaction@gmail.com and carlcanthony@gmail.com.
