Note from Alicia: If you have not had a chance to check out Max Macias' blog, lowriderlibrarian.blogspot.com I recommend it. He is one of the most fierce, authentic and outspoken advocates speaking up against white privilege in libraries. He also edited an amazing book Librarians With Spines: Information Agitators In An Age Of Stagnation which I highly recommend. We need these voices in our movement to become Trauma Informed so that we can move to places of authenticity and safety in our organizations and in our work with communities. Thank you Max for your continued work and voice!
One of the symptoms of being unconsciously inculcated by #Whiteness is the inability to see the experiences of POC as they are lived by POC.
When I was teaching my children to be empathetic, I always told them that,
When someone asks you to stop something--particularly when they say you are hurting them--you stop what you are doing immediately. You don't come up with excuses (reasons) why you should be able to continue to hurt them. You don't continue hurting them.
