A new road to healing: Native American resource center opens in Ukiah (ukiahdailyjournal.com)

A new Native American resource center dedicated to serving tribal community members affected by domestic violence opened this week in Ukiah.

Tribal Chair Sonny Elliot from the Hopland Band of Pomo Indians came to the event. Also in attendance were Chairwoman Mary Norris and Secretary/Treasurer Kendra Campbell from the Cahto Tribe, Council Member/Historian Richard Campbell of the Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians, Vice Chairwoman Angela James representing the Pinoleville Pomo Nation, Chairman Dino Franklin from the Kashia Band of Pomo Indians, Chairwoman Debra Ramirez of the Little River Band of Pomo Indians, Chairwoman Melanie Rafanan and Secretary Karen Shepherd representing the Sherwood Valley Band of Pomo Indians and Council Member Gabe Ray from the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians.

According to Billy-Elliot, the long-range goals for the center will be providing wraparound services geared to domestic violence victims, which will include transitional housing, job skills training, “dress for success” events and more. She will be working with Project Sanctuary and Yolanda Hoaglen, the director of the domestic violence program for the Round Valley Tribes, who will assist with program development and implementation.

The lack of access to resources has also contributed to the high level of domestic violence in Native communities. “A lot of Native people don’t feel comfortable receiving services from non-Natives. There’s social isolation. There’s a lack of transportation. Once we get going, we’ll be providing a whole bunch of awesome training, programs, and life skills,” says Billy-Elliot.

Historical trauma is also at the root of domestic violence.

“This is what many of our issues stem from. Historical trauma leads to alcohol and substance abuse, human trafficking and children being removed from their families at a higher rate than any other race, across the board,” says Billy-Elliot.
