The highest rates of suicide fatality among adolescents are among American Indian/Alaskan native (AI/AN) males and females between the ages of 15-19; however, rural northwestern Alaskan Inupiat adolescents have rates disproportionally higher than other AI/AN youth.
Camp Power is an intervention designed to build resiliency and reduce suicide among Inupiat Youth.
It is a 4-week summer camp program for Inupiat youth, ages 15-19
It uses cultural practices to help build resilience centered around five focus areas
- Traditional knowledge
- Connectedness to native land
- Social networks
- Well-being
- Self-determination
The camp is designed to incorporate strategies across all levels of the social ecology, with the goal of reducing suicide ideation, suicide attempts, and ultimate fatality among Inupiat youth.
We design the camp’s curriculum to both incorporate Inupiat cultural practices and address suicide risk factors across each level of the social ecology.
Suicide is preventable. We can help to prevent suicide by identifying risk factors, learning the warning signs, promoting prevention and resilience, and committing to social change.
