Adults who have experiences ACES are associated with declining health, including cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease can be prevented through a healthy diet, healthy weight, and regular exercise. My intervention will target adults who have at least one of the two risk factors for cardiovascular disease and lead them through a series of actives such as screenings, weekly exercise and education classes, nutrition classes, and support groups with the goal of preventing the onset and development of cardiovascular disease in the participants. This trauma-informed program to prevent the development of cardiovascular disease will include built in trauma-informed principles. Every single space that the activities are held in will uphold safety on all levels to ensure participants feel physically safe and welcomed. Activities will be taught in a way that does not induce stress and anxiety. . Peer support is incorporated in the project during the weekly support sessions .Participants will be encouraged to share their experiences with others, however sharing is not required in order to promote safety. Participants will be given time to exercise together to strengthen relationships and collaborations between them. This project will utilize the CDC’s social ecological model, focusing primarily on the individual, relationship, and community levels. At the individual level, the blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, exercise education, and nutrition classes provide the participants with skills training they need to improve their healthy living attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. In addition to the individual level of the social ecological model, this project also focuses on the relationship and community level by promoting healthy relationships among participants and their families and exercising with members of the community. This intervention will utilize a public health framework targeting individuals who have experienced at least one ACE and are susceptible to developing a cardiovascular disease. The intervention will utilize both a Primary and Secondary Prevention Stage.
