PHC6534 Heart Disease Prevention Strategies for Trauma-Affected Minority Populations

My grant proposal is focused on an intervention which addresses cardiovascular illnesses in racial and ethic minorities with a history of ACEs in the United States. Project activities consist of informational nutrition classes concerning the preparation of low-sodium meals, physical exercise, mental health counseling, social group support, and heart health education sessions. While the program will touch upon each level of the McLeroy social ecological model to some degree, the community and organizational levels will be focused on as the main contributors to the project’s success (McLeroy et al., 1988). In addition to the two levels of the McLeroy model, the program will also address all six of the trauma-informed principles including peer support, collaboration and mutuality, trustworthiness and transparency, cultural, historical, and gender factors, and safety (SAMHSA, 2014).

In addition, as ethic and cultural representatives of the target population the leadership will address the empowerment, voice, and choice aspect of the trauma-informed principles and will incorporate participant feedback and reassessment (SAMHSA, 2014). The public health framework will be centered on factors such as educational history, poverty, and socioeconomic circumstances and assess how they influence ACEs and the future development of cardiovascular diseases. A fully qualified and expertly trained as well as culturally and ethnically diverse multidisciplinary team will oversee the project activities with the help of the Project Manager. This team will consist of dietitians, cardiologists, fitness instructors, nutritionists, and psychologists. Information concerning the project will be distributed to potential participants through social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter in addition to local radio and television stations in Alachua County, Florida.
