Letter from Senator Angus King Pledging Support for Out of School (OST) Programs

Dear David,

The challenges created by the coronavirus pandemic are unlike anything that we’ve seen in the last 100 years. The situation is changing rapidly, but this much is clear: we all need to change our behaviors and adopt common-sense approaches to protect ourselves and our loved ones. You can find links to resources and learn more about my recent actions via my website, www.king.senate.gov, and the two buttons above.

As we continue to press forward, I still want to respond to your message to me on this issue not directly related to the outbreak or relief efforts—my thoughts are below; but first, a few simple and immediate things you can do to help slow the spread of coronavirus in your community:

1. If you’re sick, stay home.
2. If you’re worried you might have coronavirus, call your doctor before visiting.
3. Even if you’re not sick, stay home as much as you can.
4. Wash your hands – a lot.
5. Don’t shake hands!
6. Limit visits to nursing homes.
7. When in doubt, listen to the experts.

I’m with you on this and I appreciate knowing of your support for maintaining afterschool program funding in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), and I agree that students can see substantial benefits when opportunities for learning and socialization extend beyond the school day. Like you, I have been concerned with the ways in which the Trump administration has proposed to cut these critical programs for students, and I believe it is important that Congress continues to support initiatives that have demonstrated a positive impact, like the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program. That is why I recently signed a letter to the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education in support of fiscal year 2021 funding for the 21st CCLC Program. Going forward, I will continue to look for ways to advocate for Maine schools and support effective methods to enhance student outcomes.

Thanks, again, for your support on this.

Best Regards,

ANGUS S. KING, JR.
United States Senator

Knowing that Senator King continues to support CCLC is helpful in our
efforts to create programs fostering resilience in Van Buren and
surrounding towns.
