This evidence-based intervention program is called Moral Reconation Therapy, or MRT, and more than 40 inmates in Ventura County jails have successfully completed the intensive course since it started five years ago.
The intervention program targets felony offenders who have substance abuse issues and are at a higher risk to commit crimes. Many have experienced past trauma, abuse, homelessness, unemployment and mental health issues.
The intervention program uses cognitive behavioral therapy strategies that focuses on criminogenic risks. Inmates who participate in the program assess their antisocial attitudes and behaviors, personal relationships and their sexual impulses. The program also reinforces their positive behaviors and habits.
Ventura County Behavioral Health funds the intervention program, which is proctored by Alternative Action Programs employees at Todd Road Jail. There are 14 inmates participating in the program.
