Unit 2 Session 3: Decoding the ACE Screening Tools and Scores
Dr. Melissa Ruiz is a pediatrician at Pediatric Diagnostic Center in Ventura, CA., serves on the board of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) District 9 as the Section on Early Career Physicians representative as well as the AAP District 9 Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) grant facilitator. Dr. Ruiz started her work around screening for ACES and social determinants of health in 2014 and is ecstatic to be part of this team that is moving this work forward to serve the families of Ventura County.
Dr. Sarah Hemmer is a pediatrician at the American Indian Health and Services, in Santa Barbara, California. After her time at Northwestern Medical School, she completed her residency at Children's Hospital Los Angeles and then moved to San Francisco where she worked as a pediatrician in an underserved community and began her Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) work with Dr. Nadine Burke-Harris. Dr. Hemmer served on the Santa Barbara Resiliency Project helping ACEs work become more widespread in Santa Barbara and she is now thrilled to be a part of ACEs Aware Ventura County.
In this session, attendees will learn:
- At least 5 categories of Adverse Childhood Experiences that are described in the PEARL screener.
- Phrasing you can use with patients who are low-risk, intermediate-risk, and high-risk for toxic stress.
- How to create a joint treatment plan in the prevention, identification, and treatment of toxic stress.

Each session meets the qualifications for 1 hour of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LEPs, and LPCCs (Provider 016190).
