Santa Paula One Stop Care Pod offers help for the homeless with showers and more (VCStar.com)

“Traditionally, homeless individuals feel like they’re being shunned. They’re kicked out of areas in the city. They get arrested a lot just for standing around,” she said. “They need to slowly build the trust … that actually people care enough to take care of them and listen to their needs.”

The program is a collaboration among the Health Care Agency, El Buen Pastor and Spirit of Santa Paula, a nonprofit led by local homeless advocate Kay Wilson-Bolton. The agency provides the mobile medical clinic and a portable shower truck and coordinates the social and health care service offerings. Spirit of Santa Paula volunteers distribute clothing and toiletry items and run the showers.

City officials and the homeless themselves have long lamented a lack of easily accessible services for homeless people in Santa Paula. Deanna Handel, also with the Health Care Agency, said the program is a way of bringing help into a community setting that can address homeless people’s various needs all in one place. Hot showers are a good way of getting them in the door, she said.
