“Traditionally, homeless individuals feel like they’re being shunned. They’re kicked out of areas in the city. They get arrested a lot just for standing around,” she said. “They need to slowly build the trust … that actually people care enough to take care of them and listen to their needs.”
The program is a collaboration among the Health Care Agency, El Buen Pastor and Spirit of Santa Paula, a nonprofit led by local homeless advocate Kay Wilson-Bolton. The agency provides the mobile medical clinic and a portable shower truck and coordinates the social and health care service offerings. Spirit of Santa Paula volunteers distribute clothing and toiletry items and run the showers.
