Roger B. Bairstow exemplifies one man who is making a difference because he supports a leadership model with a primal desire to serve the well being of people. Roger directs Human Relations and Corporate Responsibility at Broetje Orchards, one of the largest privately owned apple orchards in the United States. Broetje Orchards has a reputation for implementing trauma-informed practices even before the term was coined and they uphold their integrity by following Robert Greenleaf’s test:
- Do those served grow as persons?
- Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?
- And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society? Will they benefit or at least not be further deprived?
“Where there is not community, trust, respect, ethical behavior are difficult for the young to learn and for the old to maintain.” (Robert K. Greenleaf, Servant as Leader)
Roger recognizes that managers are the company’s first line of outreach to employees and he works hard to ensure they are continually improving their skills to serve those they supervise. He is dedicated to upholding and improving an Employee Assistance program that assists employees with hardships both within and without the workplace. Roger believes that everyone is a leader and everyone has gifts and talents that may call them forward to lead.
Roger serves as a director at Broetje Orchards with a host of programs, leadership opportunities, etc. that implements trauma-informed practices.
