Empower Yolo: CARE Team provides support, advocacy [Davis Enterprise]

As we look back on April — designated Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month — we are mindful of all the survivors that Empower Yolo has worked with over the past 40 years.

The agency, formerly known as the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Center, has been providing services to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking, and promoting safe, healthy and resilient communities for 40 years.

Empower Yolo’s CARE Team (Concerned Advocates Responding to Emergencies) supports survivors and their families of sexual assault. The goals of the advocates are to educate survivors on their rights, ensure that they are treated with respect from all Sexual Assault Response Team members, and support their autonomy and choices.

“Because sexual assault and domestic violence are about a loss of power and control, our goal is to help the survivor regain power and control in their own lives,” says Celina Alveraz, associate director of Empower Yolo and the CARE Team leader.
