October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month & National Bullying Prevention Month

Join Empower Yolo as it kicks off its 6th annual Paint Yolo Purple campaign. Beginning October 1st, Empower Yolo will host a month long Paint Yolo Purple (the color of domestic violence awareness) Month of Action - a virtual campaign this year meant to raise awareness about domestic violence and anti bullying; and help fund Empower Yolo's essential intervention and prevention services for victims of abuse.

Domestic violence was an epidemic before the pandemic, and the virus has only amplified the stress and uncertainty for victims of abuse. For many victims, quarantine has proven to be more dangerous as it further isolated them at home with their abusers. We have seen a rise in domestic violence cases, and our restraining order clinic has been busier than ever since shelter in place. Your support this October is more critical than ever.

Help us reach our goal of raising $10,000 this month for our emergency shelter, anti bullying prevention efforts, and in support of our essential programs for survivors of abuse. In 2019, Empower Yolo provided 333 survivors (of which 176 were children) of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking shelter for 29,833 bed nights.

This year, we will be hosting a virtual campaign where several departments that provide domestic violence services will be doing a social media takeover during the month to provide a window for the community to see the importance of these life-saving programs and services for victims. Throughout the month follow us on Facebook @empoweryolo, Instagram and Twitter @empower_yolo.

We will highlight the board of directors, shelter services, counseling and legal services, resource centers and transitional housing; and our After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens program will share its anti bullying campaign.

On Wednesday, October 28 from 12-12:30 p.m. join Associate Director, Celina Alveraz and the Women's Resources and Research Center on Instagram live @ucdwrrc as they discuss accessible resources for those who may be navigating intimate partner violence.

We will also be running a twin mattress drive throughout the month; the shelter is in need of 17 new, twin mattresses to replace old, worn out mattresses in the bedrooms. Mattresses cost about $129 each. To sponsor a mattress please go to: empoweryolo.org.

A special thank you to our sponsors, Cathy and Chuck Farman who have been awesome supporters of Empower Yolo over the years. Cathy Farman, a former baord member of Empower Yolo, has been instrumental in furthering our shelter kitchen campaign amongst many other important accomplishments for Empower Yolo. We'd also like to the thank Alpha Chi Omega at UC Davis for their fundraising efforts this month to support survivors.

Please see the attached calendar for dates and details of when specific departments will be highlighted; a printable version of the calendar is available at: empoweryolo.org. Join us each week to see the life-saving work each department is doing and participate where you can.

Empower Yolo is prepared to respond to the uncertainty for victims and their families in our community, but we cannot continue to do it without you - join us in the dialogue and the movement to help end domestic violence.

Survivors and their families need your help - we need your help. Together we can ensure resources are available so that no victim has to worry about keeping themselves and their children safe from harm.

For more information or to make a contribution any time this month go to: empoweryolo.org. Thank you for your generosity and support!
