Community Events Seek to Strengthen Regional Health and Social Support Systems
Woodland, CA - In November, Resilient Yolo is launching a three-part virtual workshop series to educate members of the public on strategies for strengthening health and social support systems in Yolo County. To advance conversations around health and equity, the collaborative will also be hosting a Building a Resilient Yolo Summit in spring 2022.
Formed in 2014, Resilient Yolo is a community-based collaborative with an interest in strengthening the resilience of Yolo County by providing education about adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). In 1995, a study on ACEs identified a link between ACEs exposure and a higher likelihood of negative health and behavioral outcomes.
The virtual workshop series will concentrate on methods to integrate resilience-building and trauma-informed practices into one’s personal, work, or family life. Three bi-monthly sessions are planned, and the free workshop series is open to all members of the public.
The first workshop occurs on November 5 at 12:00 p.m. and will provide an introduction to ACEs and resilience. The workshop will be led by Resilient Yolo co-chairs Susan Jones, founder of Creative Behavior Systems, and Tessa Smith, Cultural Competence Coordinator for Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency.
Additional workshops will explore how resilience intersects with the fields of education and healthcare.
- On January 7, the focus will be on resilience in education, with speakers from the California Department of Education, Yolo County Office of Education and Woodland Joint Unified School District.
- On March 4, the focus will be on resilience in healthcare, with guest speakers to be announced later.
Each workshop will be hosted from 12:00-1:00 p.m. via Zoom. There is no cost to participate. Advance registration is requested and registration is available at www.bit.ly/ResilientYoloWorkshops.
The fourth annual Building a Resilient Yolo Summit is scheduled for May 12, 2022, at the Woodland Community and Senior Center. The summit gathers community members, service providers, educators, families, youth and leaders from across Yolo County to strengthen ideas and strategies to build a more resilient community.
“This year’s summit will bring unique perspectives to benefit Yolo County’s children, youth, and families as we move forward from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said event chair Anthony Volkar. “There will be a specific focus on health equity, resilience from trauma, and how we can improve community outcomes for all.
The summit will feature various speakers and workshop sessions yet to be announced. There is no cost to attend. Registration for the summit is not yet open. To participate with summit planning or to submit a workshop, contact Anthony Volkar, event chair, at anthony.volkar@ycoe.org.
