Yolo supervisors respond to ‘climate of fear’ with resolution [Woodland Daily Democrat]

A recent Davis hate crime combined with a changing political landscape has prompted supervisors to respond in the form of a resolution — affirming Yolo County as a “safe and welcoming community” for all.

“We drafted this resolution in response to calls from community members who share our concern with the recent vandalism at the Davis Islamic Center and the climate of fear from new federal policies,” stated Supervisor Don Saylor. “This is an opportunity for the Board of Supervisors to reaffirm our values and assure all Yolo County residents that they are appreciated and welcome in our community.”

Saylor partnered with Supervisor Jim Provenza on writing the resolution.

“Many residents of our community feel threatened by the reckless and uneven enforcement of immigration laws by national leaders who should know better,” Provenza stated. “A climate of intolerance has also been created by these national leaders that encourages unbalanced individuals in the nation and in our community to single out innocent people for acts of hatred and violence.

“In this resolution, we recognize that all people in our community are entitled to equal rights, due process and compassion,” Provenza continued. “We hope to assure all who live here that Yolo County will not join in any effort that may unjustly deprive anyone within our borders of their peaceful enjoyment of our community. We recommit ourselves to protecting the civil rights and public safety of everyone in Yolo County.”
