The Davis Police Department is revamping its restorative justice program for delinquent youths for the first time since the 1970s, pending approval from the Davis City Council at its meeting Tuesday.
The new program will focus on reconciliation between parties involved in a crime, bringing all individuals together to discuss the incident in a closed-door setting. The new technique is designed as an early-intervention resource for youths who display antisocial or criminal behavior.
Police estimate that 131 juveniles a year could go through the program, sent to police either through school referrals, referrals from the school resource officer, citations or arrests.
“By the time a kid is arrested, oftentimes we see gateway behaviors at a school — they’re getting into fights or they’re truant,” Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said.
