The Clinical Trial Treatment Train (www.nejm.org)

Note: While this is about my recent experience as a patient in a clinical trial for advanced ovarian cancer, I share it here because it's written from a survivor perspective. It's relevant for anyone who cares about trauma-informed policy and practice, in medical settings and beyond. There is a difference between researching, diagnosing and treating a condition, any condition, whether PTSD, or cancer, and living with that diagnosis and treatment. Too often (and not just in medical settings),...

Rest, Healing, & Hope for Trauma Survivors

Note: I've not posted in a while. I can't believe it's been almost three years since I was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer. I miss this community and I miss work. But I am doing well at the moment and I'm SO grateful to still be here (meaning alive and on the planet). It's been A LOT of treatment and quite a roller coaster of medical and other experiences, but that's not why I'm here and posting today. Today, I'm writing today is to reflect on how healing from trauma feels and is...

In the face of trauma, Cissy took back her power by actively ‘stalking’ joy (www.smh.com.au) & note

Evelyn Lewin, a writer for the Sunday Morning Herald in Australia reached out to me last month to write a story about my stalking joy practice. When I told her that I'm not naturally joyful or joy-filled person, thanks to developmental trauma and the impact of ACEs, and how it's a practice I've only come to in the last few several years, I wasn't sure she'd write the story. I was afraid she might not find it (or me) lighthearted enough, might be disappointed that trauma is the back story, or...

ATN's 2021 Standing Strong Conference & Personal Note

Every time I'm interviewed about the trauma-informed movement or parenting with traumatic stress, I talk about the adoption community because adoptive parents have led bringing the trauma-informed movement into school systems and have been doing this work for decades. And I mention the Attachment Trauma Network (ATN) as the prime example although I recognize that many other organizations have and are doing this work as well. Most often, teachers, principals, social workers, adjustment...

Surviving medical school with depression (www.kevinmd.com) & note

Here are two excerpts from a powerful blog post on the KevindMd site which is written by an anonymous medical student. I recommend the entire blog post which can be found here . Cissy's note: If doctors to be, while in medical school are not treated well by the medical model they are being trained to perform in, how can we expect them to then treat patients with compassion and understanding? I think of this now not only as a trauma survivor, and a patient advocate, but as a mother to a...

Drained

I can agree with that when it comes to life and especially to life with cancer. But I keep wondering what is hardship anyway? What’s hard? What’s easy? It’s so subjective and varies by person and circumstance. What I do know is I was uncomfortable and unprepared for my PleurX surgery procedure even though it was done at my request. A PleurX is a type of chest tube that can be used at home, allowing me to drain the malignant fluid that accumulates in my right lung due to #ovariancancer. As...

Professional Joy Stalker

I was thinking today that I might make t-shirts and coffee mugs that say, “professional joy stalker.” It would come with a list of blissful things to remind myself and others to appreciate. As my friend Lynn says,” What if joy is stalking us?” and all we need to do is be still long enough to notice and marinate in multiple daily pleasures. I love that idea but it didn't come naturally to me. What came naturally was fear. I was always on the search for danger, betrayal, and disappointment. I...

Dr. Claudia Gold's Recent Blog Posts & Videos

Dr. Claudia Gold is an ACEs Champion who has as much medical expertise as she does empathy for parents, including and maybe especially for parents who are struggling. She recognizes the challenges and difficulties many parents experience but instead of shaming or punishing parents, she starts by listening to and learning from us. While this seems like the most practical, effective, and common-sense approach, to me, it is something many providers don't have the time, skill, inclination, or...
