Following the election, many reports from schools reflected fear and anxiety among students and families about the potential for deportation. Other feared that the outcome gave a license to some to bully minorities or marginalized members within the community. Still others reported overt bullying and victimization. In response, the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) put out guidance for schools, educators, and any adult working with children experiencing (or re-experiencing)...

In partnership with the Defending Childhood State Policy Initiative and the National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice, new guidance has been released on trauma screening in schools. Importantly, this document lays out a series of important considerations when determining whether trauma screening is indicated in each context, and how to go about collecting and utilizing the data generated from the process. Schools can utilize school-employed mental health professionals, like school psychologists, to support trauma informed services within a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework, although this requires a commitment to improving ratios rather than only hiring community clinicians to provide intensive services to students in need.
