What is it you do for a living? (Parenting, volunteering, CEO of social service organization, etc.)
Administrative Secretary in an Alternative High School
What organization(s) do you volunteer or work for?
Mat Su Borough School district is who I work for. I am a volunteer on the MEA Charitable Foundation - Operation Roundup.
What is your interest in PACEs and resilience science?
I started working in the Mat Su Borough when I had to change careers from a Medical field to education when my son was born with special needs. I've worked in high schools since 1985 and was always surprised that we didn't recognize the results of what was PTSD for our students. I was happy to see that for Soldiers we are aware but was always frustrated that we didn't have any way to recognize it in children for educators. Now we do and it is called ACEs. I am very supportive of the wide spread systemic education programs that I see right from the Community showings of Paper Tigers several years ago in our community. Great work and I am looking for something to do when I retire from my job soon and would love to find something in the field working with educating the community about ACEs. Education is key and is a win win for all and I would enjoy being part of that.
If you're part of a community-based PACEs initiative, which one?
Valley Pathways is the school I work for. We have been educating students who have a high ACE score for over 20 years and we were already practicing the trauma informed approach. Valley Pathways Alternative School opened its doors in August 2000 and I've been the Administrative Secretary at this school since its beginnings. ACEs is what we know and how we teach and function and why we are one of the healthiest schools in the Valley.
