LIFE BEHIND THE MASKS: Surviving and Healing from Mother-Daughter Sexual Abuse, by Wilma MacLiver

This post is about a book that was published on September 29, 2021. But this posting is not a book review--it is intended as information only--and I welcome and appreciate comments. Thank you for reading. DISCLOSURE: As a writer and editor, I had an opportunity to write an article about child abuse in 2010 and publish it as the cover story in Raising Arizona Kids magazine. Writing it gave me a chance to meet Vincent J. Felitti, M.D. and make a promise to him that I would pursue for the rest...

How A Mother With ACEs Became A Better Mother [Medium.com]

Author Esther Wojcicki wrote HOW TO RAISE SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE: Simple Lessons for Radical Results (copyright 2019) and placed this post on www.medium.com on May 1, 2019: www.humanparts.medium.com/how-a-painful-childhood-made-esther-wojcicki-a-better-mom-4c78fc30b921 . It's titled "How a Painful Childhood Made Me a Better Mom." Since this is the month of Mother's Day (it's on Sunday, May 12, 2019), I thought I'd link it here on ACEs Connection. Happy Mother's Day to all mothers, everywhere, and...

The Investigative Fund: "The Trauma of Everyday Gun Violence in New Orleans"

My fellow care-ers about trauma, A representative (the editor-at-large) for The Investigative Fund, Joe Conason, spoke this spring at Tucson Festival of Books. Today, this article was posted in that organization's email newsletter, and I am posting a link to it so members of this community may know about it. The ACE Study is included--as it should be--and the article is an excellent work of journalism.

Relationship Advice from a Rabbi: Listen to How ACEs are Embedded in This Lecture!

As an editor, I sometimes coach writers as they're in the process of creating a manuscript. At present, I'm working with a novelist who "needs a better ending." I asked her to ask her characters to reveal what they needed from her, but I suggested that some research be done in the "outer world." Not content to leave the issue to the writer alone, I had some time to a bit of research on my own, and look...I found this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdhnP7MvvWo Rabbi Manis Friedman, author of The...

Expert Offers Free Video Training On Attachment (Week of April 2, 2018)

Last week I shared the link to the video with Oprah on 60 minutes. In that show, she talked about the role of childhood trauma in her life. I believe that this was an important event for all of us in the Trauma and Attachment fields. It furthers our work and brings collective light on these important issues so they do not stay in the shadows! I'm also excited to let you know that next week we will be reopening our free video training series on Attachment, for the first time since 2016. You...

First Responders, Trauma, Something New out of Israel

Here is a report from Israel about supplying psychological support at the scenes of violence against humans. If I get in trouble for re-pasting the content, I'll take the blame--this is VERY IMPORTANT! I have wondered why there are not Emergency Rooms for people in psychological crises--this is yet another version of that dream. Thank you, people of Israel and to Israel 21C newsletter. I have posted the beginning of the article below in italics: Thirty Israeli EMTs, paramedics and doctors...

My ACEs Mission

In 2010, I was asked to write an article for a parenting magazine regarding child abuse. My initial response was, "No way!" Having had a decent childhood myself and nearly ready to launch two kids of my own, I could not wrap my mind around writing...

Memory of Traumatic Experience and Biology

Here is an interesting take on how to heal hurtful memories from a wise researcher:  http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03...emc=edit_th_20120306 The article was in the NEW YORK TIMES online on March 6, 2012.  I am very interested in the topic of resilience and in memory and how to heal from hurtful experiences. Perhaps hurtful experiences have some value--but does the healing from them have even more value?
