What is it you do for a living? (Parenting, volunteering, CEO of social service organization, etc.)
Early Childhood Education. Have prior experience as a pediatric Respiratory Therapist, Chemical Dependency counselor, a Domestic Violence Perpetrator Treatment therapist, Therapeutic Behavioral Aide (mentoring adolescent and pre-adolescent boys) and in several other kinds of work.
What organization(s) do you volunteer or work for?
I'm currently a FT Early Childhood Eduction student @ College of the Siskiyous, Weed, CA. When I complete my AS degree I plan to begin working on a BA in Early Childhood Development.
What is your interest in PACEs and resilience science?
I experienced significant trauma during my childhood and have spent my life seeking ways of healing those wounds. I've explored many kinds of therapies, and even tried engaging in a more 'spiritual approach to that, but always with a nagging sense that whatever growth I experienced was almost in spite of, rather than because of, my involvement in those pursuits. About 6 years ago, following the unexpected loss of an important relationship, I decided it was time to question everything I thought I knew about healing.
I began to search for new information about how relationships do and don't work (Sue Johnson's work has helped immenssely with that), and revisited Affect Theory, Shame dynamics, and then Attachment Theory, which led me to revisiting the realm of trauma theory and work, which led me to discovering the work of Daniel Siegel - which opened up the whole world of neuroscience: Alan Schore, Bessel van der Kolk, Steven Porges, etc.
When I came across the ACE concepts, I recognized that it has great potential for influencing the field of medicine to recognizing the emotional origins of much human suffering.
