What organization(s) do you volunteer or work for?
I volunteer with Plastic Polution Coalition and my son’s independent school.
What is your interest in PACEs and resilience science?
I’m am coparenting a now 13 year old African American preteen young man. During a routine parent teacher conference my son’s teacher shared that my child was doing extremely well academically but he was some what of a chameleon. He presented differently based upon the house hold he was staying at on any given day. She wanted to get to see who the child was separate from the parents. This me to read Book The Drama of the Gifted Child and the Childhood Disrupted. While searching for answers to support my exceptional child I realized that I was the gifted child whose childhood was disrupted. I realized the only way I could protect the future of my child was to heal the wounds of my past. I have an ACE score of 7-9 depending on how honest or open I am being on any given day.
Although I had been in therapy with a trauma informed therapist and had explored EMDR nothing brought the reason for my disregulation home like seeing the film Cracked Up and a screening in Los Angeles. I was able to keep it together cool come and collected until the Q and A. It was something about being in a room full of people who knew the hurt you felt because they felt it to. It was as if our souls were laid bare with out a word.
If you're part of a community-based PACEs initiative, which one?
