Coping with current events and the great mask debate

Good morning everyone. I am a retired therapist, a trauma specialist. My specialty is PTSD, dissociation, and all areas that are trauma related such as Eating Disorders and Addictions. The virus, news and protests have triggered many people with PTSD and Complex PTSD. The great mask debate has also been a trigger. A huge step in healing and self empowerment is to use your voice. Use it with love and compassion but use it. It takes enormous courage to continue to heal yourself and shine your...

Thoughts About Communication And Meaning

Good morning everyone. I wonder how many people understand why "miscommunication" happens? If one person is vibrating at a higher frequency or different frequency then the other, it is hard to understand one another. For instance, if one person is in a state of love, peace, harmony and joy and the other is in a place of anger, fear, projecting their feelings and worry it is hard to communicate. Nothing means anything, no word, feeling or action until we assign it meaning. If people can't...

Having Faith When It Seems Hard To

Good morning everyone. I was told once 1st thought is Spirit, 2nd thought is Doubt, 3rd thought is Fear. By the time you get to the 3rd thought, you have lost track of the 1st thought. As abuse and trauma survivors we are often in crises of faith. We have frequently been taught either in words or actions that we are of little to no value. Who would love us or want us as we are? We frequently feel damaged and may judge ourselves by what we have or what we can accomplish or how much we can...

The New Culture of Positivity

I would be interested in other people's responses please and thank you. I have noticed that somehow it has become almost a sin to not be positive all the time. People are not just encouraged to be positive which I think is a good thing, but are shamed or blamed if they are "negative" which is not a good thing. For many trauma survivors this behavior can be triggering and retraumatizing since many survivors have been taught for years to ignore their feelings, and/or that no one wants to hear...

Flashbacks

Many people do not understand flashbacks and can be very scared and disoriented when they happen. Flashbacks can be visual (seeing), auditory (hearing), touch (feeling like someone is touching you when no one is there or something else that involves touch), tasting (you might have a bad taste in your mouth that was there when the trauma happened), or olfactory (smell). There are also somatic or body memories flashbacks. You can have a panic attack or be nauseous and this can be a flashback.

The Holidays

I would like to share a few thoughts. Not everyone loves or looks forward to the holidays. Unfortunately, this can be a very triggering time to many people. A lot of people have had losses and other negative things happen during this time of year. Too many people feel isolated and alone. It can be helpful to be as compassionate to others as possible because everyone has a story. So many wounds are invisible and are then discounted by the general public. The holiday season is supposed to be...
