Postpartum depression is a mood disorder that can affect women shortly before or soon after childbirth, but commonly begins within a month after delivery. This under-recognized and under-treated disorder can affect any woman of childbearing age. The video provides patient testimony and information on the signs and symptoms of postpartum depression and reinforces the importance of seeking help and treatment from a health professional. It was developed for the Mental Health Across the Lifespan Initiative – a public-private partnership between the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
