San Diego’s Cherokee Point Elementary School has drawn national attention for its approach to school success centered on addressing the impact of childhood trauma and adversity. Parent involvement is a key strategy.
When I went to view "Paper Tigers" at SDSU Dr. Hokoda and staff from Cherokee Pt. including the principal Mr. Higa were there. They spoke about how trauma informed care is used on the Cherokee campus. I appreciated seeing this video to learn how a program for parents could broaden the sense of shared experience and purpose for supporting children in our school community.
Although we recently lost our private funding for our Parent Center at Clark Middle School hopefully avenues will be determined to promote with teachers, parents and students aspects of trauma informed care here.
