Good afternoon -

The Georgetown Law Center on Poverty and Inequality, together with the US Department of Justice, is putting together a conference on ACEs' Effect on the School Discipline of Girls of Color.

We're seeking experts to consult about the event.

Please reply here if you have access to research, data, curricula, or promising practices that show the need for trauma-informed approaches in schools, focused specifically on the needs and assets of girls of color.

Many thanks,

Rebecca Epstein | Executive Director | Georgetown Law Center on Poverty and Inequality

Washington, DC

Rebecca, The Center for Public Integrity recently published "A state-by-state look at students referred to law enforcement" by Chris Zubak-Skees and Ben Wieder (updated October 29, 2015). Hope that's helpful to you and folks at Georgetown Law Center on Poverty and Inequality. I think [juvenile] Judge Steven Teske's 12/8/2015 article in the JJIE: "States Should Mandate School-justice Partnership to end Violence Against Our Children" is also a suitable adjunct to your curricula.

Tonight, my local school board hosted a presentation at our local library, and some of the content focused on a number of items we've been using at our local Intentional Peer Support Center-which only welcomes people over 18 years of age "at risk of " having "mental health challenges". Some of the "Resilience Building" discussion quite impressed me!

We have done work in my district moving beyond Boys and Men of Color to Girls.  We have also done extensive work with Commercially Sexually Exploited Children within the educational setting.  I am also writing my dissertation on Post Traumatic Growth among Female Students of Color within the School to Prison Pipeline.  Let me know if you want to hear more about our work ... or my amazing dissertation (smile).

Rebecca, This conference is approaching a very timely and necessary topic.  I welcome updates on the final presentation details.  If you haven't already, do reach out to the African American Policy Forum (AAPF).  Their recent initiative, #HERDREAMDEFERRED and many others centers the needs and lived experiences of Black women and girls.  Given their legacy of championing the "needs and assets" of Black women and girls, AAPF may be a solid resource for data and policy expertise.
