ACES screening questionnaire for child and caregiver

In Maine, we are collaborating on using the ACEs screen in a variety of ways with expectant families and those with young children, 0-5.  Dr. Mark Rains, our ACEs guru and clinical advisor pro bono to the Maine Resilience Building Network has developed a "non-categorical" ACEs screen and dialogue which you may be interested in.  Some of our other work, in additional to piloting this in the coming year in a more formal and controlled manner, is the emerging scripted dialogue to be used with parents that explores the ACEs that bother them and the impact of these upon their parenting.  Would be happy to talk with you more about this anytime.  My best, Sue

Hi Sherri,

Chris Blodgett in Spokane WA is using ACES with children and caregivers in a Head Start Program and he has lots of interesting results from his work.  Don't know if he is a member of this network but if you Google his name you can find a number of presentations he's done on using ACEs in educational settings.

This screen was developed by Mark Rains, Ph.D. who can be reached at firemarks@fairpoint.net  Mark has a long history of advancing ACEs awareness and prevention.  This screen is completed by the individual and no details, other than the total # of ACEs, is shared.  A conversation follows along the lines of how many ACEs still bother you, and a focus on "what happened" that those other ACEs no longer bother you (focus on resilience).  We have tried this out with several individuals and it is quite well received and can by-pass some of the resistance especially by practitioners who are worried about coming upon reportable situations.  My best, Sue
