ACES Consortium in Arizona has formed a workgroup to train individuals with disabilities and also family and providers.  We are looking for any training materials that have already been developed.  We'd be happy to share our training when complete!

I've attached NPR's wonderful series "Abuse and Betrayed," regarding the prevalence of sexual abuse in adults with intellectual disabilities- seven times as high as people without disabilities!

Having worked in the autism community for a number of years, what I suspect is we will identify ACEs that will correlate to the disability.  If we appreciate that unresolved stress impacts the brain, then the increased level of stress that lives in a household dealing with disabilities needs to be considered.  Especially when parents are overwhelmed, juggling multiple children, therapists, doctors appts, etc.  Compounded if such juggling act prevents a mother from working yet finances are troublesome.  Or if divorce occurs and a single parent is taking it all on solo.  Compounded further if the child is suffering from bullying etc in school or in the community.  I do believe that we have a population of children dealing with chronic issues who take on additional ACEs not addressed by the original questionnaire.  I have lived it and supported parents now for 17 years dealing with it.  To respect all we know about ACEs, it only stands to reason that this level of unresolvable stress has an impact on the health of everyone in the household.  And I would love to continue a conversation with anyone working on ACEs on this level.

Mary Beth, Its almost like you just described the journey our family has been on for about 20 years!  Thank you for articulating the intersection so well.  Some day, I hope there will be an interest based community here on ACEs Connection, to focused on children and families impacted by developmental disabilities.  Please let me know if this interests you as well.  Thank you for all you do to support children and families like mine.  I know how transformative support can be. Karen
