I am looking for information or research on healthcare providers using ACES or trauma screening with patients before prescribing opiates so they can assess and/or talk to patients about ACEs and their connection to increasing the risk of developing an opiate use disorder.
If anyone knows of healthcare organizations working on this or of research looking into how ACEs are a part of the current opiate misuse problem, I would greatly appreciate it.

Our internal medicine clinic no longer provides chronic opioids but we do have a primary care-based opioid addiction treatment program using buprenorphine. We surveyed 48 of those patients regarding ACEs. We found that 58% had 4 or more ACEs and 78% had a family member with a substance abuse issue. It really makes sense that an ACEs screen should be done prior to opioid prescription, but I am not aware of a pain management program that does that routinely. Our former program did use the Opioid Risk Tool which has questions about childhood sexual abuse and family history of substance abuse, but does not ask the full complement of ACE questions. Would be interested learning more about any program that is doing ACE screening - and what they do with the info.

And Dr. Karen Derefinko, mentioned in the article, should have completed the analysis of the 1200 patients for whom he has ACE scores to see if the ones with higher ACEs relapse more often.

Dr. Derefinko reports that analysis of the data is underway and preliminary findings should be available in the next month or two.
