Gathering and using local data

I am interested in finding how other local/regional communities might begin to gather/use local ACES data. I have usually found local data more compelling in changing local institutions that reference to national studies. Could ACEs plus some sort of protective/resilience score be adapted into an evidence -based approach for screening and prioritizing children for preschool programs for at-risk children? I imagine that gathering that information for preschool aged kids is a challenge with a lot of threats to validity. Also, I have seen some statewide approaches to gather routine ACES data about their population. Are there similar efforts in use that scale to the local regional level (regional populations of around 250,000)? When/how is it most appropriate to collect local/regional ACES data that could be compared to some of the national studies and how is that local data translated into action. A lot of questions I know. Thanks for any leads you could provide.

Hi, David: Chris Blodgett at Washington State University Area Health Education Center has been gathering data about Spokane elementary school students. You'll find some info in this story about trauma-informed schools in Spokane. He's also been tracking ACE scores of parents and children in Head Start, and can send you his latest paper. Also, the students at Lincoln High School in Walla Walla, WA, have done their own ACE survey. You can find a link to it in this story.

Teri Barila, a member of ACEsConnection, is working on a resilience screening tool.

HI David,

I haven't done much posting on the site and it seemed that I needed to send you a friend request to post (so you'll see the request). Are you familiar with the CDC's National Survey of Children's Health? In 2011 they added ACE questions (somewhat different from the original questions) and you can search by state or region and then drill down into the data. I'm in Delaware and we haven't reached a point of using our local data for prioritizing linkage to resources but we do have a HRSA grant and our state public health is going to collect ACE data from caregivers of very young children (0-3) along with a measure of caregiver strain and use that to link to resources for the caregivers.
