Hi everyone,

I am a Private Practice Psychotherapist and Consultant in Denver, CO. As part of trauma-informed care, I have been trained in how to conduct EMDR in a group setting and am beginning to work with various types of non-profit agencies and schools to incorporate Group EMDR into their programming for clients. What we are noticing in the research is that Group EMDR is quick, efficient, safe, cost effective and culturally appropriate. It is a wonderful way to reach a large group of people and to provide mental health services within a non-mental health agency. To learn more, please visit my website at www.kellysmythdent.com. I am always looking for new partnerships and ways to spread the word. If you or someone you know may be interested in learning more, please contact me!

Thanks,

Kelly

Thanks, Kelly.  This is very interesting.  Are you willing to work with agencies outside of Colorado?

Hi Audrey,

Thank you for your interest! Yes, I am working with various organizations within the United States and globally. Contact me at kelly@kellysmythdent.com with some days and times that you are available to talk. I would love to learn more about your agency and explore a potential partnership.

Best,

Kelly

Hi Kelly I would very much like to know more about its application in groups and in schools esp the nature of the issues worked within a group setting.

Hi Dawn,

If you email me at kelly@kellysmythdent.com, then I would be more than happy to email you some of the research studies that have been conducted on EMDR in a group setting. Thus far, the research has been conducted in natural disaster settings and in hospital settings. However, I and my partners would be very interested in applying for funding to conduct research and program implementation of EMDR in a group setting in schools, if you would be interested in considering a partnership in that way. If so, please let me know what days and times you would be available to set up a call. I look forward to hearing from you!

what evidence have you got that it's "culturally appropriate", or is that noticed in practice, but without controlled outcome research?

Hi Russell,

I really appreciate your question! At this point, the "cultural appropriateness" of Group EMDR is noticed in practice because it is being conducted in various different cultures around the world and receiving similar positive outcomes. Although a controlled outcome research study on it's cultural appropriateness has not yet been conducted, I hope to explore that over the next several years with my team. We are preparing to conduct research on Group EMDR with various immigrant and refugee populations in the US and hope to more specifically measure its cultural appropriateness that way. Please feel free to contact me at kelly@kellysmythdent.com if you have any further questions or want more information.

Best,

Kelly

Of course!

*** Below contains the dates, titles and links to download some of the research on Group EMDR thus far. The founder of the protocol (Dr. Ignacio Jarero) has been working on research related to: 1) a Randomized Control Study for EMDR in a group setting with a higher number of participants than the studies listed below, and 2) The ability to conduct EMDR in a group setting utilizing paraprofessionals, rather than trained psychotherapists, in order to have the ability to reach people in remote parts of the world that lack mental health resources. The results of both of these studies should be completed and published in 2017 and 2018.

The Social-Emotional Learning/'Civic'Tasks for prisoners, that took place as far back as the 'Wardenship' of Thomas Mott Osborne (Auburn, NY prison; Sing Sing, NY Prison,;and Portsmouth Naval Disciplinary Barracks-in the early 1900's, as well as the more recent [trauma-informed] California Honor [men's] prison, and Hawaii Women's prison may be suitable examples. Susan Lawrence, M.D. addresses some aspects of the California Honor Prison, in her book: "Creating a Healing Society: ...". (Jo Dee Davis--Hope this is a helpful start...)
