We are looking to begin a project here in Camden, NJ where 10 organizations will join to become Sanctuary certified at the same time.  We are calling it the "Healing 10" and our goal is to touch 1/3 to 1/2 of youth in Camden.  It is very exciting as it will cut across sectors--the police department, schools, community services, providers are all in the mix.
The real question for us is how we are organizing ourselves.  We are coalescing around the idea of "A Community Of Communities."  Seeing as the social norm seems to be competition and not collaboration, we are working hard to find a way to structure ourselves for commitment, outcome and innovation.  It is our belief that it is not the certification that will be so powerful as the penetration into new areas with the goal of spreading.  The way we work with each other and literally moving the fram from "Why to What happened" in the community is our goal.  We want to organize ourselves for "viral health."  Each of the groups is independent and so finding the right structure to do this--especially the right way to image this is vital.  We seem to like the image of cell division where through our growth more and more complex life emerges--this is the innovation piece.
Curious if others have models, experiences of working with organizations in this fashion?  Thoughts on this?
Thanks.
Jeff

Jeff: Trudy Townsend, who just joined ACEsConnection, has been part of organizations that have been moving on a similar path in The Dalles, OR. They made a commitment to become Sanctuary certified about 18 months ago, and have been moving steadily along.

She might be a good resource for you.

Hi Jeff, I love the "viral health" analogy. We are beginning the same process in Wood County, Ohio. We just had our Kick-off event with Sandra Bloom speaking to 700 people and then having Dr. Bloom and Landa Harrison and Sarah Yannosy with the Sanctuary Institute do a day-and-a-half workshop. Our next step is to bring our nascent Trauma Informed Community Coalition to the forefront of our efforts to develop a trauma informed county. We have formed our steering committee. We have one agency - child and family mental health agency - going through the Sanctuary certification. We hope to have others do likewise, but not sure we can do more than their 5 day training. We plan to being Sanctuary Institute back for their intensive 5-day training for a number of agencies. Still working to expand our critical mass (or tipping point) but we are making progress. We have a county collaborative group, a mandated council called the Family and Children's First Council, with mandated community leaders, which is willing to take on our Coalition as a project. Let me know of your interest in sharing. I'd love to know how you got 10 organizations to commit to becoming Sanctuary Certified. That is impressive. Cheers, Tom Clemons, MA

Smile At Your Baby! would LOVE to be considered for this program! We would be delighted to share our BABY BITs with teen, new, young, soon-to-be, and especially "at risk" parents! Of course, there is never a charge or fee for anybody to subscribe to BABY BITS via text message.

Smile At Your Baby!'s mission is to reach out to, and through direct education, teach parents WHAT it means to bond with baby, WHY it' so critically important, and precisely HOW to do it. Our secondary emphasis is on advocating for empathy and compassion in the home/family. The vision is that more and more each day, we will begin to see not only happier babies, but also healthier families, safer communities and a better world for us ALL!

Our BABY BIT program is still in it's pilot program stage. This would be a wonderful way to grow our subscription numbers so that we can be assessed and formally deemed a "evidence-based" program. Would love to talk with you, Jeff, about this in more detail. Feel free to contact me at email2shelley@yahoo.com or call me at 509.592.5626.

Smiles,
