Hi, Mary: Since this whole network is about adults with ACEs, can you be a bit more specific? We have two new interest-based community sites that may be what you're looking for:

Practicing Resilience for Self-Care and Healing, for people with (expanded) ACEs who are looking for ways to heal and thrive, and Becoming Trauma-Informed and Beyond, which is for people who are helping their organizations integrate trauma-informed and resilience-building practices and policies based on ACEs science.

What do you think?

Cheers, Jane

Thanks, Mary: I think that people who have developmental trauma will find good resources in the Practicing Resilience community site, and I hope that you contribute to it. I think there's quite a bit of commonality about how we respond to different types of trauma and how we go about healing from it, so pooling our knowledge and resources will help accelerate that.

Cheers, J.

Hi Jane,

Sounds good. I will definitely contribute. Thanks for your quick response and the fantastic work you are doing for ACEs.

FYI, I am a Master Life Coach and host a transformational video talk show and would love to discuss a possible interview with you about ACE’s and Developmental Trauma.

I am amazed that I just found out about Developmental Trauma and ACEs 4 months ago after reading Bessell van der Kolk’s book, Body Keeps The Score.

After 30 years of intense dedication to my own personal growth and recovery, and after seeing many therapists and physicians throughout the years, it is a tragedy that not one of them ever suggested that I may be dealing with trauma and therefore needed to get specialized trauma based treatment since their services could not completely heal me.

It was only after reading The Body Keeps The Score that I found out that talk therapy and other cognitive therapies alone cannot heal trauma. Needless to say I was upset that the mental health community and my doctors failed to diagnose me correctly which has caused me many years of suffering living in a hyperaroused brain and all of the fallout the comes with it.

I am feeling called to get the word out about ACEs and Developmental Trauma and am looking to speak with others who are as passionate as I am about this cause.

Therefore, even if you can’t do an interview with me, I would love to chat with you briefly to see how I can get more involved on a national level.

Thank You,

Mary Giuliani

Hi Mary:

You will find many of us who had our own ACE aha's and some shock at what we didn't know and what wasnt shared or know by health practitioners. Browse through the communities. Read articles and essays on ACEsTooHigh as well as comments. Please share your own experiences. This is an open platform so all can share. It takes a while to get the hang of the site, but keep asking questions!!! And use the search tool to narrow down topics you want to learn more about. Cissy

Please know I'll send you a Private Message Mary on possibilities of local, regional, and national engagement.

Hi all,

I joined the community a year of so ago but this is the first time I have ever posted!   This is a huge stretch for me!

Your email resonated with me, Mary, because I have a similar story!  When I discovered ACE’s a couple of years ago, I felt truly validated for the first time in my life!  I have an ACE score of 7 and have spent the last 26 years in addiction recovery and therapy.  Prior to that, I also spent years “living with a hyperaroused brain and all the fall-out that comes with it.”  (P.s.  I love that line!)

A couple of years ago, when I was completing my graduate degree is when I first heard about ACE’s and watched Nadine Burke Harris’ Ted Talk.  Since that time, I have wanted to shout it from the rooftops, or jump on the band wagon, or DO MORE TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ON THIS TOPIC!

I am a mental health professional in private practice in Houston, Texas working with people struggling with trauma and addiction.  I work tirelessly trying to educate clients, but, sometimes, I feel like I’m swimming upstream!  It just feels like our culture is in DENIAL and on difficult days, I want to throw in the towel!  On those days, I question my decision to become an LPC and wonder if I’m just retraumatizing myself.

I just want to do more, or maybe figure out a different way to utilize my skills and gifts!  The one thing I know for sure is that I can’t even put into words the passion I feel inside about ACE’s!!   If any of you have any ideas, please let me know!

Hi Jenny

I had a similar revelation myself after 10 years or so teaching wounded students in public elementary schools.

As you say --  "Since that time, I have wanted to shout it from the rooftops, or jump on the band wagon, or DO MORE TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ON THIS TOPIC!'".

It is certainly swimming upstream to focus on this "awareness" aspect.  Yet it is so crucial.  All other aspects of the new paradigm are muted at best in folks minds until they are "aware".  In my tiny survey in my school's neighborhood, about 70% of young parents are completely unaware.

I am with you
