Hello Community,

I work for Children's Division and I am working with the court system to start a Family Treatment Court.  I will be the caseworker to work with the families that enter the family treatment court.  As it stands right now those families will be now mom's who are substance users.  I am looking for curriculum, training's, books, articles that will give me more knowledge about best practices when working with this population.  Please share any and all information you may have.  Thank you in advance.

Hi Jamie - great question.  I'd suggest you visit www.griefrecoverymethod.com and specifically look for the Helping Children with Loss program information.  This program is not for kids - but specifically for adults who have/love/work with children and youth.  The 4 session program is taught by a Grief Recovery Method Specialist, Certified by the Grief Recovery Institute.  If you don't find anyone in your area who is actively promoting such a program, give me a call and perhaps I can help you find someone.  The other option would be for you - or others in the system there - to consider becoming certified yourselves.  I'd love to talk with you more about this program and others we offer.

I have been a Certified Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselor for 40 years in California; was a probation officer prior to that.  You might contact the national certifying body for counselors in the substance abuse/recovery field (NAADAC), and similar certifying bodies in the state where you reside,  (In California, it's CCAPP in Sacramento).   I only recently learned of ACES and want to become certified.  I think ACES is the missing link in serving individuals, families, neighborhoods, and any group of people who come together regularly for a purpose.

Hi Jamie I am a Training Coordinator at the Center on Violence Against Women and Children at Rutgers University.  We have a multi-session online professional development program that has been developed for child welfare professionals and is offered through our Virtual Academy. The broad goal of the program is to look at the overlap of violence against women, child welfare, and specific intersecting topic areas to encourage trauma informed practice. The programming has also been used in person with court personnel so is adaptable or can be modified to meet varied needs.

Currently we have 5 courses available for enrollment and are continuously rolling out the rest over the next 12 months. The sessions are self-paced online learning courses which run about 3-5 hours. I know that you mentioned substance abuse specifically--this course is currently under development and is slated to be ready in the next 3 months.  The roll out schedule for all of the courses is below.

Current Courses are:

  • Understanding Violence Against Women
  • Screening, Assessment, & Basic Interventions
  • Impact of Domestic Violence on Children
  • Economic Empowerment with Survivors
  • Diverse Populations

Rolling out in the next 1-3 months:

  • Mental Health
  • Substance Abuse

Rolling out in the next 3-6 months:

  • Understanding Perpetration
  • Legal Responses
  • Ethical Issues and Values
  • Middle and High School Populations

These courses are also part of our professional certificate in violence against women which can be earned by taking 10 total courses (5 required and 5 electives).  Courses are also approved for Social Work CEH credits (which may vary by state)if this is something you may be interested in too.

If you'd like more information please feel free to reach me at training@ssw.rutgers.edu or check out our web page here: https://socialwork.rutgers.edu...rofessional-training

I know it's not an exact match but do hope this helps

Hi- I highly recommend you consider implementing the Parent-Child Assistance program. Dr. Therese Grant has done extensive research on the efficacy of this program and has a fully developed curriculum, protocol for starting a site, and evaluation materials.  I am currently training social workers in Washington state about Harm Reduction and Safety planning for moms with SUDs. The social workers are constantly talking about how PCAP is the best intervention for the families they work with. You can find out more about PCAP here: https://depts.washington.edu/pcapuw/
