In an effort to make sure the Social Determinants of Health make it into the data that is used for analysis I have been advocating for Medical Coders to be able to code from RN and Social Workers notes. (ICD 10 codes Z55-Z65). Part of this, Z62, seems to be the ACE's which Social Workers might be likely to document. If anyone works in the Case Management, healthcare, Medical coding world please consider supporting this effort. Thank you, Diane Iverson RN ER Case Manager

That is great. Our local Federally Qualified Health Center has utilized United Way - Women's Leadership Initiative dollars to fund a Medical Social Worker to provide additional screening/resources and tracking of ACEs, anxiety, depression, Intimate Partner Violence, PTSD, and other sources of stress and trauma for women (age 18-54 mostly). I will have to follow up and see if this is 'coded' a certain way or not. With coding is it universal or dependent on the system someone is using. And are you able to pull out who was screened or actual ACEs and related health or wellness issues?
Thank you for any additional information,

Hello Ana,
The ICD 10 coding is universal for medical billing. Anyone who wants to get paid by insurance companies uses it. At this point the coders are not allowed to use RN or Social Worker Notes. I am very hopeful that it will go through as a guideline change for next year. I went a meeting at CMS this week that is open to the public to see how the process works.

Hello- great conversation! I can always reply on ACEs Connection to help produce the information I need. Has any progress been made on any of this information since the conversation started? I am in Western North Carolina and work with a network of 150+ primary care doctors offices who are all starting to learn about trauma informed, resiliency focused care.... but per usual, the problem is billing/coding and docs 'not having enough time' to ask these Qs..... We are part of a network of the Division of Medicaid here in NC and contract with the state to offer clinical case management for the Medicaid population.... any more news on what types of codes WOULD work for MDs, RNs, or even MAs in the primary care setting?
Thanks in advance!
