Dear Aces Connection,
Many of you have responded to the email request below and I am ever so thankful! Due to scheduling conflicts and availability conflicts the event will be moved to the new tentative date date of February 4, 2017. I am still organizing this event and I welcome others who can attend. I will get back to all who have responded to me via private message! Thank you so much for your interest and I hope to see you on February 4, 2017.
" My name is Sakeina and I am a fourth year medical student. I am apart of an organization called the Student National Medical Association. As the community Service Coordinator I am putting together a "Black and Blue" discussion at Lehman College to dismantle implicit biases, racism, and encourage peace in our community.
The discussion will be centered around trauma and its detrimental effects on the human psyche in relation to the recent violent deaths of blacks by police officers, violent images in the media, displays of social injustices, and negative attitudes towards police officers. We will be planning to facilitate this discussion with the help of police officers who have decided to volunteer their time, physicians, community leaders, and eager and intellectual students. The conversation will serve as the first of many in an attempt to bridge the gap between police officers and community members. It will also serve as an educational effort to show that there can be medical consequences, specifically on mental health, for all parties involved when exposed to these traumatic events.
We are in need of any community leaders, graduates, physicians, or Social workers who would come and lend their voice to this event! There will be no compensation unfortunately because we are a nonprofit organization, but you will have a chance to change the future if you come and speak! If you would like to learn more please reply or email region9community@snma.org. "
