Hi, my name is Mickayla and I created the petition found here - https://www.change.org/properd...meanspropertreatment
My goal is garner public support for this, as in the past the APA has brushed off the diagnosis. Now that the ICD-11 is including it, most likely it will be added into the next edition of the DSM-5 (DSM-5.1?). I want the extra security of this petition to show that the general public understands and wants it to be included as well. I have the C-PTSD foundation who signed my petition, and have been welcomed by ACEs Connection leadership to share in these forums, and on a post.
I was wondering what advice could be given to me when I send these signatures along, or if I should be contacting any other organizations or people to speak about my petition?
Thank you for your help and advice,
Mickayla

I suggest you reach out to Bessel van der Kolk MD. He's been trying to get CPTSD (or a similarly named dx) into the DSM since the 1990's. The process of changing the DSM is extremely political but one would hope that the acknowledgement in the ICD will move the needle in the US as well.
Yes, Kevin Becker I was going to suggest the same. Bessel has been advocating for it for many years. I can't recall if his suggestion is C-PTSD or Developmental Trauma, but either way, he's the man you want onboard.
I did reach out to him a week or two ago but he has not responded, I imagine that he is too busy for that sort of thing since he teaches. I heard he lost his license in the Netherlands the end of last year too so it must not be a great year for him. But I did try!
I would suggest you get as many signatures and as much help as possible from other organizations.
The Trauma Informed Educators Network group on Facebook and the Teaching Social Justice Resource Exchange may be a good place to gain signatures!

Hey! So I went ahead and applied to The Trauma Informed Educators Network - but I'm a student so I don't know if they'll allow it. Teaching Social Justice Resource Exchange does not allow me to promote my own work - since it's my petition it looks like I am not allowed to share.
Thank you for giving me places to contact though! I didn't know this existed. It is extremely helpful! Thank you.
Mickayla,
Bessel left the Netherlands as a teenager. He did not lose his license there last year. I suspect you've confused him with someone else.
Here are a couple papers that align with the effort you're undertaking. The original conceptualization/name for such a diagnosis was something referred to as DESNOS (Disorders of Extreme Stress Not Otherwise Specified). I agree with others this will require massive support within the broad mental health community as well as data and some luck. Seeing the ICD include it has been very rewarding. Good luck.

Thank you for sharing some information with me! I will look these over and add them too. If anyone else has studies/information they'd like to share I'd really appreciate it! Thank you everyone for your support.
Theres a 10 minute podcast here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?...amp;feature=youtu.be) That does talk about Bessel losing his license and has information about a court case that is indeed against him. But it's dutch, so maybe I can't look over the 'proof' documents? It is a court case that uses his name, atleast. Maybe this is misinformation? I'd love if someone could clarify.

It'll be great to have you there!
I have no idea but like the attempt. My two cents (which is just a guess)...
To truly make this happen, the first thing to research is who actually controls the DSM. Who controls what gets included? What power dynamics are at play. Find out who, specifically, needs to be pushed on. And then focuses the pushing efforts that direction.
From there, can take a look at whether an online petition is something that would matter to these individuals. Surely can't hurt. But some petitions seem to do nothing. Then again, I mean, who knows. What goes viral and what doesn't a very complex thing.
I'm kind of weird though. I'm an idealist who also hates false hope and rallies against hope quite often because of it, while also thinking that many things are possible if approached the right way.

The APA makes the DSM, and would a petition effect them? Public pressure would, I feel, to a degree. But probably not a huge amount. Usually they are controlled by research, but they cherry pick data they like when money is involved, I feel.
I am trying to make this more widely known for that pressure aspect, but I think what will have the most pressure is the fact that WHO which controls the ICD has added C-PTSD to the ICD 11 starting in 2022. Because the diagnostic manuals go hand in hand I believe that there will be quite a bit of pressure academically and organizationally. Even if public pressure was just a small bit of extra difference, I think it would be important.
But I'm passionate about the subject, young, and a student. So I very well could be having stars in my eyes, it could have no effect at all. Even with no petition I think the APA may add C-PTSD because of the ICD, though.
