Hi everyone --

I am an Alaska-based journalist working on a story about great summer reads (for the K-7 crowd) which promote resilience and social-emotional-learning. I'm envisioning anything from old classics that play to this theme, or new literature targeting it directly. I'm not looking to bore our poor kiddos to death, but I'd love to create a good working list of fun, exciting reads that will deliver positive messaging along the way. Any recommendations?  Thanks....   - Jill

I have a copy of a bibliography of Children's Books about assorted trauma and intended to also promote resilience, at home-but I'm in our local library. I'll try checking for the source: The Reference Librarian today wasn't familiar with it, but helped me recall that I had e-mailed it to our Assistant Library Director. I'll check my e-mail for it later. ... There are also some great Native American stories I noticed at the National Center for PTSD Library in White River, Junction, Vermont, which may help [K-7 ? ? ?] Social Learning, too. you may be able to search there at ( www.ptsd.va.gov ) or visit their facebook page.

Just a few of many:

"Friends from the Other Side / Amigos del otro lado" by Gloria Anzaldua (discrimination, immigration, social emotional skills, friendship)

"My Diary from Here to There" by Amada Irma Perez (a child coping with a difficult process of immigration)

"Arvy Aardvark Finds Hope" by Donna O'Toole is a lovely children's book about grief and healing, and one they can color in themselves

I've been compiling a list of suggested books that I want to get on the subjects of resilience, social emotional skills, race, and gender equity (but I haven't read them yet). They're here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/regis...2?ie=UTF8&page=2

Okay - one more post and I'm done.  Mouse was mad by Linda Urban: Proud to be You the Positive Identity Assets by Pamela Espeland (using the 40 Developmental Assets by the Search Institute) : Words Are Not for Hurting by Elizabeth Verdick: How To Take the GRRRR Out of Anger by Elizabeth Verdick: Respect and Take Care of Things by Cheri Meiners: Be the Boss of Your Stress; Self Care for Kids by Timothy Culbert.

"Children's Books and Videos on Trauma and Traumatic Grief" [a 66 page bibliography] published by Chris Dunning, Ph.D. on May 7, 2008, came up at the top of a google search list, noting it was in the ACEsConnection.com website: https://www.pacesconnection.com/...KLIST2008REVISED.doc                         ....except when I tried the link [i just copied and inserted here], I got an ACEsConnection / Hoopla  message that it wasn't available, and to try a different link.

I noticed from the cover page, [It hadn't been yet copyright-ed], merely marked on the cover: "Do not reproduce....".

Inside Out and Back Again

http://www.amazon.com/Inside-O...n*=1&*entries*=0

Inside Out and Back Again is a New York Times bestseller, a Newbery Honor Book, and a winner of the National Book Award! Inspired by the author's childhood experience of fleeing Vietnam after the Fall of Saigon and immigrating to Alabama, this coming-of-age debut novel told in verse has been celebrated for its touching child's-eye view of family and immigration.

Hà has only ever known Saigon: the thrills of its markets, the joy of its traditions, and the warmth of her friends close by. But now the Vietnam War has reached her home. Hà and her family are forced to flee as Saigon falls, and they board a ship headed toward hope—toward America.

This moving story of one girl's year of change, dreams, grief, and healing received four starred reviews, including one from Kirkus which proclaimed it "enlightening, poignant, and unexpectedly funny."

An author's note explains how and why Thanhha Lai translated her personal experiences into Hà's story. This paperback edition also includes an interview with the author, an activity you can do with your family, tips on writing poetry, and discussion questions.
